ST. PAUL, Minn. – A 1974 abstract oil-on-canvas by Alden Mason (American, 1919-2013) sold for $162,500 at Revere Auctions‘s July: Fine Art & Decorative Art sale held on July 27. The work, titled Winter Zinger, rocketed past its $2,000-$4,000 estimate to achieve the sum, a new world auction record for the artist. The winning bid was placed online through LiveAuctioneers.

BERKELEY, Calif. – On Thursday, August 11, PBA Galleries will host a sale of more than 450 lots of material showcasing the history of the Americas and of the vast expanses of the globe. Early exploration and colonization, along with the political conflicts, economic developments and societal clashes that accompany them are revealed in the lots on offer. These include written accounts, drawn and photographed prints, scarce ephemera and maps that chronicle the unknown lands’ gradual reveal. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

NEW YORK — A major exhibition of lobby cards from the silent film era highlighting the untold stories of women’s contributions to the early film industry is on view at New York’s Poster House through October 9. Experimental Marriage: Women in Early Hollywood draws on a unique collection of posters and ephemera assembled by the Chicago-based collector Dwight M. Cleveland, who has spent nearly half a century accumulating what is believed to be the largest privately-held film poster archive in history. The exhibition marks the first time that these lobby cards, a recent addition to Cleveland’s collection, have been exhibited in a museum setting.
