WILTON, Conn. – A letter boldly signed by George Washington, a game-worn Michael Jordan basketball jersey, a 1963 Christmas card signed by both JFK and Jackie, and an archive of material signed by Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas will appear in University Archives’ online 460-lot auction slated for Wednesday, February 1 at 11 am Eastern time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

LONDON – The Battle of the Nile 1798 Post Captain’s Naval gold medal awarded to Davidge Gould, captain of the 74-gun H.M.S. Audacious and one of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s Band of Brothers who fought alongside him in that naval contest against Napoleon, was sold by Noonans in its auction of Orders, Decorations, Medals and Militaria for a hammer price of £100,000 (about $123,000) on January 18. Estimated at £80,000-£100,000, it was bought online by a private collector.

Hirshhorn unveils its first contemporary Chinese photography show

WASHINGTON – A Window Suddenly Opens: Contemporary Photography in China is the Hirshhorn’s first survey of photography by leading multigenerational Chinese artists made between the 1990s and 2000s. The exhibition, which continues until January 7, 2024, showcases 186 artworks made between 1993 and 2022, of which 141 are a landmark promised gift to the Hirshhorn from pioneering collector of Chinese art Larry Warsh. The exhibition’s title is drawn from a 1997 publication, a near manifesto, by Rong Rong and Liu Zheng that celebrated the possibilities in shifting the practice of photography away from realism toward a conceptual art practice.

DETROIT (AP) – A federal appeals court has ordered a Detroit museum to hold onto an 1888 painting by Vincent van Gogh amid a Brazilian collector’s dispute with the museum regarding the work.

NEW YORK — Costume jewelry was once looked down upon as substandard. It’s true that this style of jewelry is made from cheaper materials and often mass produced to appeal to a wider audience, but it’s not cheap, junky jewelry any more.
