LOS ANGELES — Everyone from traditional collectors to fans of the show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills took part in the court-ordered sale titled the Property from the Thomas and Erika Jayne Girardi Residence, held September 21 at John Moran Auctioneers. Bidders took part absentee and live online through LiveAuctioneers.
The interest in this sale was worldwide, drawing more than 8,000 registered bidders and more than 1,000 viewers tuning in to see the action. The 250-lot sale lasted almost five hours but kept momentum due to the continuous spirited bidding.
One of the first highlights of the auction was the J. Seward Johnson Jr. bronze sculpture Allow Me. This 81in tall man holding an open umbrella, which came from Girardi’s sculpture garden, had an estimate of $7,000-$9,000 but brought in a strong $13,750.
Moving from the garden to the pool, the entire Michael Taylor Designs collection of patio furniture performed extremely well, led by a pair of Michael Taylor Montecito outdoor garden armchairs that had an estimate of $1,500-$2,000. The patinated aluminum armchairs with cream chenille upholstered cushions and aqua piping earned $7,150. The six other lots from the Montecito collection, including additional armchairs, side chairs, chaise longues and sofas, were each estimated $1,000-$2,000. Together, the seven-lot grouping brought in $43,225.
Traditional style was prevalent throughout the Girardi mansion and collectors were riveted by a 19th-century Continental hand-painted cabinet. Estimated at $1,000-1,500, the black lacquered cabinet festooned with mythological oil paintings realized $11,875.
A pair of late 20th- or early 21st-century Rose Tarlow O’Kelly drum lamp tables that were estimated at $600-$800 became the target of a bidding war between an online bidder and an in-house bidder who together increased that number 15-fold. The in-house bidder jumped the bid multiple times until the online participant conceded. The pair of tables ultimately attained $12,500.
In addition, a black lacquered Chinoiserie-style console table with gilt highlights that had an estimate of $600-$800 ended at $10,000.
The fine art selection was minimal but masterful. An 1837 oil painting by the French School, displaying two mythological figures, had an estimate of $2,500-$3,500, and ended the bidding at $10,625.
The other highlight in the fine art category was a Tony Peters work from 2001, titled Pantry. Estimated at $500-$700, the Los Angeles cafe painting went for $5,000.
