MOUNT CRAWFORD, Va. – Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates’ Fine & Decorative Arts Auction Oct. 18 and 19 was a highly successful event and produced robust prices in multiple categories. The two-day format consisted of 1,720 lots of high-quality material and generated record levels of participation for the firm, a solid indication of vigor in this diverse segment of the marketplace. Bidding was intense throughout both days with over 7,000 registered bidders from over 50 countries participating in house and online. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.
One of Saturday’s top lots – and the weekend’s biggest surprise – was an impressive antique Malagan/Tatanua ceremonial mask (above) at $17,550. Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia, the iconic South Pacific ethnographic object remained in excellent original condition overall and went to a Belgian buyer on the phone after heated bidding.
Saturday’s other top lot was a fine Ercole Barovier Tessere Policrome Murrine art glass vase (below). Discovered by the consignor at an East Coast yard sale many years ago, the striking cylindrical form captivated bidders and eventually settled at $17,550 (Lot 1001), going to a European buyer.
Session I on Friday started the weekend off smoothly with most offerings meeting or exceeding expectations. The 772-lot session featured part one of the miniature lighting collection of Yvonne and the late Pete Lynch of Lincoln, Delaware; part one of the Connie Scott collection, Bristol, Connecticut; the John & late Evelyn Teague Collection, Bloomingdale, Indiana; a Florida private collection; and part three of the Marcia C. Shaffer collection, Medford, New Jersey; plus others.
The select grouping offered in the Friday session sparked significant presale interest and produced strong results overall. Top lot of the day was a rare Northwood No. 333 Leaf Mold miniature fairy lamp, which garnered $5,625. Other noteworthy results from the Friday session included a Diamond Quilt Air Trap mother-of-pearl satin glass miniature finger lamp at $3,802, a Ribbed Opalescent glass miniature lamp in pink at $2,925, and a fine pair of Vienna/Bohemian decorated glass tumblers/beakers featuring portraits of Holy Roman Emperor Francis II of Austria and Caroline Auguste of Bavaria at $2,340.
Session II on Saturday consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of fine and decorative arts and produced strong results and a few surprises with numerous categories demonstrating signs of continued vigor. Featuring a broad range of art glass, rare music boxes, silver, jewelry, fine art, and ceramics, Saturday’s 948-lot session produced consistently strong prices across a number of collecting categories.
Other noteworthy results from the Saturday session included a desirable Edouard Leon Cortes Paris street scene at $15,210 (Lot 1466); a rare Edison Louis XV floor model phonograph, one of only 62 made, at $10,530 (Lot 1182); and – a late addition to the sale – a whimsical Emile Galle faience open vase decorated with anthropomorphic insects at $6,435 (Lot 1147) to a New York bidder on the phone.
