Oakwood Auctions greets fall with 1,900 lots of stamps and coins, Sept. 15-18

It will feature more than 1,900 lots of rarer Canada, British Commonwealth, USA and Great Britain stamps to worldwide collections and accumulations. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The Day 1 session, taking place September 15, will contain coins, banknotes and supplies from Africa to worldwide collections. There will be offerings of Denmark, France and its colonies, Germany and states, Italy, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Highlights include Lot 93, a Denmark collection that spans the years from 1854 to 1928, and Lot 196, a French Colonies collection estimated at $1,000-$1,100.

September 16 brings the Day 2 session, which will feature choice items from Poland to Yugoslavia, as well as the British Commonwealth from Aden to Turks & Caicos. It will also have some great collections and accumulations from Russia, including a space and rocket-themed covers collection estimated at $575-$650. The Commonwealth is highlighted by Australia and states as well as Bermuda, which is represented by a 1930 #95a 2sh 6p pale orange, vermillion and black example with gray-blue MLH, estimated at $800-$1,000.

Featured in the September 17 Day 3 session will be Canada from first pence to face value, with early Canada and Newfoundland proofs and specimens, led by a Canada #37E-Ad 3c dark neutral gray plate essay mint block of four stamps, estimated at $850-$1,000. It is offered alongside Great Britain collections and accumulations, including 1929 Imprimateurs and quality mint Victoria. A particular standout is Lot 1446, a mint 1877 vertical pair of the 5 pound telegraph color trial, which carries an estimate of $7,000-$7,500.

The fourth and final auction session, set for September 18, will be very exciting as it contains China locals and USA. The Locals collection sports imperf in-betweens, inverted surcharges and larger multiples. Of particular note is a Chungking 1894 #J17 block of 15 with nine inverted overprints MH/MNH, estimated at $450-$480.

The US section contains many collections and accumulations, as well as better singles, including original gum examples of the 1847 #1 5c red brown, estimated at $1,200-$1,375, and also the 1893 #245 $5 black, estimated at $600-$700.
