Bronzes, paintings highlight Cowan’s Cleveland auction Jan. 26

CLEVELAND – Cowan’s Cleveland Market Winter Live Salesroom Auction on Friday, Jan. 26, will feature an outstanding selection of fine art, furniture, lighting, silver, glass, pottery and other decorative arts in a 10 a.m. session. An afternoon session that day will consist of mechanical banks, shaving mugs, toys and teddy bears. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Twenty bronze figures will be offered in separate lots including five by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (1880-1980), an American sculptor known for her works in bronze. A native of Philadelphia, Frishmuth studied briefly with Auguste Rodin at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and for two years with Cuno von Uechtritz-Steinkirch in Berlin. She then returned to the United States, and studied at the Art Students League of New York under Gutzon Borglum and Hermon Atkins MacNeil. While in New York, she worked as an assistant to the sculptor Karl Bitter.

Each of the Frishmuth figures is from the 1920s, marked “Roman Bronze Works Inc. N.Y.” and depict lithe female nudes. They are titled Laughing Waters (above), Allegra, Extase, Sweet Grapes and The Vine. All five Frishmuth bronzes are from a Northeast Ohio estate.

A portfolio of 12 drypoints titled After Fifty Years of Surrealism by Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) traces the career of the artist by documenting milestones of his private life as well as landmarks of the Surrealist movement. It is at once the continuation and culmination of André Breton’s 1924 Surrealist Manifesto, further establishing Dali as one of the movement’s most crucial contributors. Accompanying texts by André Parinaud are enclosed in the portfolio case. Each print measures 29 ½ by 24 ½ inches and is framed (28 ¼ by 21 ¾ inches).

Boulder, Colorado, artist William Scott Jennings (b. 1952), whose landscapes of the American West are in corporate and private collections around the world, is represented in the auction by an oil on canvas titled Thunder’s Promise. The signed and dated 1995 painting has an $800-$1,200 estimate.

Americana in the auction includes a late 19th-century coverlet depicting the Great Seal of the United States. The one-piece double-weave coverlet is composed of navy blue wool and natural cotton.

The auction also lists nearly two dozen Persian rugs, 26 lots of antique furniture and two tall-case clocks.
