NEW YORK – Once again, the New Hampshire Antiques Dealers Association (NHADA) has offered a strong selection of items, and once again, Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art, and Americana has selected the best for Jasper52. A total of 344 lots comprise the May 20 auction, which commences at 6 pm Eastern time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
One of the many head-turning lots in the sale is a carved, double-sided wooden sign touting the joys of ice cream. The sign dates to circa 1930 and has an Art Deco style. Clearly, a great deal of work went into it. The applied letters are also hand-carved. Unlike most advertising pieces, this ice cream sign bears a signature: C.M. Newlove Co. The ‘C’ apparently stands for “Charles” and he or his company have some connection to Utica, New York. The period sign is in exceptionally original condition, retaining its original paint and iron hangers and showing no evidence of restoration. It measures 68 by 24 1/2 in and might have been displayed indoors, over an early drug store ice cream counter. The charming sign carries an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.
If 14-year-old Jane Temple could be whisked into the future the instant she placed the last stitch in the schoolgirl sampler she completed circa 1828 and learn that it was estimated to sell for $5,000-$6,000, she might well faint. But it’s no mistake–her needlework is that good. The teenager, who lived in Antrim, New Hampshire, stitched the entire alphabet in several different fonts before adding a short poem that reads: Jesus permit thy name to stand/as the first effort of mine hand/And While my fingers over this move/Engage my heart to seek thy love.
Rounding out the top lots is a Bristol delft steep-sided punch bowl in red, blue, and green. It dates to circa 1710 and features a depiction of flowers and plants on the interior of the bowl. It is estimated at $2,500-$3,000.
