NEW YORK – Auctions at Showplace will celebrate Asia Week by presenting 280 lots from New York City-area estates on Sunday, March 20. Highlights include a pair of Indian Nandi sculptures, a large Mongolian censer, a Chinese Chang’e crane maiden scroll painting, a Southeast Asian Khmer torso and a pair of Chinese cloisonne fu lions. The sale also includes silver, fine jewelry, designer costume jewelry and furnishings. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Arts from India open the sale with two lots of Indian stone carvings depicting reclining Nandi, or Vrishabha, the bull vahana of the god Shiva, outfitted with saddles, bridles and headpieces. Each is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

The March 20 auction is replete with Chinese antiques, led by an 18th-century Chinese export hand-painted gouache on paper six-panel folding screen featuring flowers, plants and a multitude of exotic birds and insects. The piece, which was later mounted on a wood panel screen, is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Equally alluring is a pair of large, early 20th-century Chinese cloisonne guardian lions. The female has a cub under her paw and the male has a ball, and both feature a hanging bell around their necks. The pair’s provenance includes the collection of fashion designer Vivienne Tam. Another strong offering in Chinese cloisonne is a pair of 19th-century candlestick holders in the shape of blue elephants, adorned with intricate bridles and saddles and decorated with si bats upon a yellow ground framed by cobalt blue Greek key geometric borders. The pair carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Also of note is a large Mongolian lidded silver censer inlaid with coral, turquoise, lapis lazuli and jade carvings of animals and birds, estimated at $3,000-$5,000. European silver highlights include a Kirk & Son sterling silver flatware set for six with extras and serving pieces in the Old Maryland Plain pattern, and a pair of early 20th-century Tiffany & Co. entree plates, each weighing 35.49 troy ounces and together estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

The March 20 auction also features a collection of fine and costume jewelry, including a standout group of vintage Chanel runway jewelry.
