NEW YORK – Auctions at Showplace‘s November 21 sale will feature a diverse offering of objects that will make you think of Park Avenue elegance. It includes old master paintings and opulent antique furniture along with costume jewelry and luxury goods from prime New York Metropolitan Area estates. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Highlights begin with a circa-1780 French Louis XVI period pair of three-light figural candelabras in ormolu, mounted on white and bleu-turquin marble pedestals, estimated at $10,000-$20,000. The pieces have provenance from Ariane Dandois and Sotheby’s.
Carrying an identical estimate to the candelabras is an 18th-century Russian or Continental School portrait on canvas depicting a gentleman recipient of the Order of St Andrew with a white dog. The piece might picture Ferdinand I, who also reigned as Ferdinand IV of the Kingdom of Naples and Ferdinand III of the Kingdom of Sicily, and was later known as Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies.
Also of note are a pair of circa-1740 Italian Rococo armchairs with giltwood frames ornately carved with rocaille decoration and boasting red silk velvet upholstery with gold threading. The chairs, which are estimated at $8,000-$15,000, have provenance from Ariane Dandois and Sotheby’s Northern Italian armchairs of such grand scale as the present ones are usually called “poltrone da parata;” similar to the French fauteuils a la reine, these armchairs would have been displayed along the walls of large salons in an important Roman palazzo.
The November 21 auction also features an impressive collection of fine jewelry. Leading the choices is a pair of vintage Kieselstein-Cord 18K yellow and white gold Angel in My Window diamond drop clip earrings, estimated at $4,000-$6,000. The earrings feature a carved high relief angel motif surrounded by pave round brilliant-cut diamonds and bezel-set drop diamonds. It is followed by a vintage 1950s Jaeger LeCoultre 18K white gold diamond ladies watch set with 59 round brilliant-cut diamonds; a vintage Angela Cummings platinum and diamond oblong oval open link bracelet; and a Kutchinsky 18K yellow gold textured bird pin accented with round brilliant-cut diamonds and a ruby eye. The sale also includes luxury pens by makers including Namiki, Omas, Montblanc, Cartier, Parker and Aurora.
