PHILADELPHIA – Kamelot Auctions had an exciting day on Saturday, Feb. 22, with its highly anticipated Modern Design Sale. The auction featured nearly 500 lots of French, Italian and American designer furniture, lighting and decorative items. The ultra-stylish selection piqued the interest of buyers from all over the world, from seasoned dealers and designers to first-time bidders. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.
The big-ticket item of the day was Lot 215, a set of 12 Lucien Rollin dining chairs (above), with a final bid of $10,937.50. The most exciting bidding match occurred during Lot 207, a beautiful Art Deco armoire, which ultimately sold for $10,400 – more than eight times its estimate of $700-$900. The pair of Italian mid-century modern lounge chairs in Lot 329 came in at $9,100, and the Roche Bobois sectional sofa in Lot 287 went for $7,500.
Sleek and simple parchment furniture items were highly sought after in this sale. Lot 146, a pair of parchment covered cube-form club chairs in the manner of Jean-Michel Frank, climbed to $5,000 against their $1,200-$1,800 estimate.
A pair of parchment screens in Lot 106 went to the highest bidder for $4,680, and Lot 47, a sideboard circa 1950, ultimately doubled its estimate at $4,160. Close behind was a pair of cabinets circa 1960 in Lot 52, which sold for $3,750.
Sculptures and art glass also proved popular at Saturday’s auction, with a large abstract sculpture by James Knowles in Lot 264 selling to the winning bidder for $4,160 – far exceeding its original estimate of $400-$600.
A signed bronze piece by Japanese artist Minoru Niizuma in Lot 436 sold for $2,600. Lot 260, a glass figure by Napoleone Martinuzzi, reached $1,430, and a Line Vautrin-style convex mirror decorated with green glass in Lot 48 more than doubled its estimate at $4,940.
