Alden Mason work rockets to record-setting $162K at Revere Auctions

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A 1974 abstract oil-on-canvas by Alden Mason (American, 1919-2013) sold for $162,500 at Revere Auctions‘s July: Fine Art & Decorative Art sale held on July 27. The work, titled Winter Zinger, rocketed past its $2,000-$4,000 estimate to achieve the sum, a new world auction record for the artist. The winning bid was placed online through LiveAuctioneers.

Robert Snell, one of the owners of Revere Auctions as well as the house’s paintings and sculpture specialist, explained that Winter Garden belonged to Mason’s Burpee Garden series of works, for which the artist “mixed turpentine with paint. It was considered his most successful series of paintings, but [the means of creation] affected his health, so he had to stop. His student Chuck Close showed these artworks to his dealer, Allan Stone, who then purchased several of them to showcase in New York City.”

Snell went on to say, “We sold this particular painting for a Fortune 500 company. The buyer is located in the Seattle area — where the artist painted — and is believed to have been a broker for a collector.”

With regard to the record sale, Snell said, “We received several inquiries on the painting. Pre-bidding on LiveAuctioneers was up to $26,000, so we knew that the painting was going to sell for a lot. We were incredibly surprised with the result. The previous auction record price [for the artist] was $45,000 (hammer price).”
