CHICAGO – On October 18, a sale bearing the title Gold Boxes and Vertu from the Estate of a Prominent Kansas City Collector nearly doubled its estimate at Hindman. Competitive bidding on these stunning objects led to the majority of lots selling for well above their high estimates. The extraordinary craftmanship of the collection was clearly appreciated by bidders, with a 95 percent sell-through rate achieved across the 42 lots. Overall, the auction realized more than $419,000.

An 18th-century antique diamond and bloodstone box led the auction, doubling its estimate to realize $68,750. The ultimate example of an object of vertu, this box features approximately 25 carats of old mine, European and rose-cut diamonds mounted in silver-topped gold. Based off of the decoration, it is likely that it was made in Dresden in the mid-18th century during the reign of Frederick the Great.
