Bidders find nautical club items shipshape at Fellows auction

BIRMINGHAM, UK – Following the closure of Birmingham’s Nautical Club earlier this year, Fellows auctioned unclaimed club memorabilia, novelty items and medals on Oct. 6. LiveAuctioneers.com provided absentee and Internet bidding.

The deactivated 4-inch deck gun (below) that stood outside the nautical club for many years had become something of a local landmark. Previously fitted to a merchant ship or cargo vessel, the gun far surpassed the estimate of £500-£800 to sell for £2,100 to a local buyer.

Two World War I-era sea mines, which had also become a familiar sight at the Nautical Club, sold for £420.

Medal groups were also featured in this auction, with a group including a Distinguished Service Medal selling for £2,500 and a Naval General Service medal that had a Yangtze 1949 clasp sold for £1,600. Lot 1006 was awarded to S.W.A Walsingham ORD. SMN, who served on the HMS London until he was killed on April 21, 1949.

The Cartwright Memorial Trophy (below), an impressive silver-plated figure, modeled as a sailor wearing a HMS Birmingham uniform, carrying a rifle and cartridge belts, sold for £680.

A Penelope Douglas (1934- ) oil painting (below) depicting the Royal Yacht Britannia and D86 HMS Birmingham sold for £480.

The British Trawler Glance was sunk by enemy action in Torbay during World War II. Later the ship’s bell was recovered and impressed with “Nautical Club 1973.” The bell sold for £150.
