SARASOTA, Fla. – Sarasota Estate Auction had another extraordinary sale May 20-21. It drew more than 5,000 bidders in more than 40 countries. The total exceeded $650,000 and multiple lots performed extremely well, including pieces that significantly outperformed their estimates.

The top performer was a Qing dynasty Mandarin court silk robe. There was a lot of interest in the garment and a bid of $14,000 before the sale started. Multiple phone bidders and online bidders pursued the lot, which had an estimate of $20,000-$35,000. It ultimately achieved $39,060, selling via LiveAuctioneers. Sarasota Estate Auction experts believe it is returning to China.

Another fantastic lot was a Chinese Export silver centerpiece bowl that weighed 106 troy ounces. The silver bowl, which sported two intricately ornate dragon handles, was very popular with everyone who visited in-house. Estimated at $8,000-$12,000, the centerpiece earned $21,420.

One piece that greatly surpassed its expectations was a blanc de chine Buddha figure with a spiritual symbol. Several people requested condition reports for this item, as well as additional images and videos. Prior to the start of the sale, it had drawn a bid of $1,000. Estimated at a modest $400-$600, the piece brought $25,200 and, like the Qing dynasty Mandarin court robe, was sold via LiveAuctioneers. The consignor was understandably delighted with the result.

Many of the paintings in the May 20-21 auction performed admirably, including an oil on canvas attributed to Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860). This portrait of an American naval officer rose to $19,530, a sum that is more than double its estimate. Delivering a pleasant and welcome surprise was a work by Dominican artist Juan Plutarco Andujar. A few works by him appeared in the sale lineup, and one oil painting of his that opened bidding at $100 ended up selling for $6,300.

A Grandma Moses (1860-1961) oil on board painting of a rural farm home was another noteworthy piece on offer. Listed prior to the sale as opening at $35,000, the painting sold for an undisclosed price to a Virginia collector.
