California landscapes achieve high prices at Moran’s

MONROVIA, Calif. – Moran’s Fall California & American Fine Art auction on Nov. 17 achieved strong results with a well-curated selection of paintings. From the California coast to the cliffs of the Grand Canyon, inspiring vistas from across the country made a splash. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.

Scenes from around California continue to inspire strong prices from collectors. The top lot of the day was a serene Granville Redmond landscape with poppies and lupine against a backdrop of eucalyptus and rolling hills. As expected, the quintessential California vista sparked a bidding war with one lucky phone bidder winning the prize for $100,000 (above). All prices realized includes Moran’s 25% buyer’s premium.

The Surging Sea by Anna A. Hills of the rocky coastline around Laguna Beach surged to $9,375 (below).

A springtime view of an emerald green hill in San Juan Capistrano captured the attention of painter Edgar Alwin Payne as well as the buyer, soaring above the high estimate to bring $46,875.

An evocative view of a dirt road titled 17 Mile Road – Monterrey, California from Manuel Valencia brought $11,250.

Dramatic landscapes from mountains to deserts were some of the most coveted works of the day. The stunning Mountain Landscape by Birger Sandzén was one of the most popular works heading into the auction and brought $62,500 after spirited bidding.

A snowy mountain landscape cut by an icy stream is a triumph from painter Aldro Thompson Hibbard and went for $4,062.

A shady eucalyptus tree provides relief from the dry desert heat in Anna A. Hills’ wonderful work that sold over the high estimate for $7,500.

A peaceful view of the Grand Canyon was the inspiration for The Place … Sipap by Curt Walters which brought $10,000.
