Chinese bidder takes ‘Wandering Poet’ home for $323,000

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Michaan’s Fine Asian Works of Art auction of Dec. 14 saw the most highly anticipated lot, Fu Baoshi’s hanging scroll titled Wandering Poet, achieve the top figure of the day at $323,000. Estimated at $200,000-300,000, the ink and color on paper depiction of a poet/scholar walking through a natural environment was won by a bidder from Xiamin, China.

Other top performers in the six-figure range at auction included lot 3068, a fine white jade brush pot (below) of the Qianlong period that achieved $265,500 ($200,000-$300,000) and a set of four Famille Rose porcelain plaques by the Studio of Wang Qi that realized $118,000 (lot 3169, $100,000-$120,000).

An enameled porcelain plaque (below) of a scene of bamboo sprays in the foreground and a serene waterfall in back (lot 3168, $2,000-$3,000) sold to an Asian bidder located in Spain for $41,300.

Also noteworthy was an eight-panel screen (below), which had a rosewood body beautifully embellished by various hardstone carvings (lot 3128, $10,000-$15,000). This Republic period piece also sold for $41,300 to a California bidder.

Jade sales were abundant, lead by lot 3065, a fine white jade carving of a majestic mythical horse at $56,050 ($30,000-$50,000). Rounding out the jades was a yellow jade water coupe that more than tripled projections at $26,550 (lot 3054, $6,000-$8,000) and an immaculately carved, covered tripod censer from the 19th century that brought $23,600 (lot 3066, $10,000-$15,000).

Additional lots that exceeded expectations included three internally painted quartz crystal snuff bottles that sold for over eight times estimates at $26,550 (lot 3022, $2,000-$3,000), a bronze bird-form archaistic vessel that more than quadrupling projections at $26,550 (lot 3106, $4,000-6,000), and a Ming dynasty painting titled Geese and Lotus that sold for over seven times estimates at $14,000 (lot 3170, $1,500-$2,000).
