Chinese porcelain bowl the big fish at Capo Auction: $62,500

NEW YORK – Capo Auction celebrated its seven-year anniversary with the company’s most successful auction of the last two years, on Nov. 21. A 16th-century Chinese porcelain fishbowl took center stage, along with a collection of highly desirable similar pieces. Select fine jewelry also did well at the sale, along with contemporary art. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.

The three days of previews brought a lot of interest in the Chinese items, which led to high-energy bidding in the room, online and on the phones. Bidding soared for the top seller of the day, a Chinese porcelain fishbowl (above) marked Jia Jing (1522-1566), with all-around dragon and flower decoration, which sold for $62,500. A second Chinese porcelain fish bowl from the 19th century with all-around floral and vine decoration sold for $27,500.

Also in the Asian arena, a pair of Chinese hardwood armchairs (below), each with open back and arms, panel seats and block legs and joined by a box stretcher, went for $12,500.

A pair of Chinese porcelain garden seats with all-around blue and white decoration of peacocks and foliate vines sold for $2,750. Two 19th-century Chinese blue and white porcelain bulb vases, a near pair decorated with flowering vines, both about 9 3/4 inches high, went for $1,500.

A Chinese two-light table lamp, its iron base cast in the form of a Buddha’s head, sold for $5,000.

Exceptional art pieces at Capo Auction included a Saul Steinberg (Italian/American, 1914-1999) watercolor and ink on paper, which sold for $11,250.

A nearly 6-foot-tall abstract geometric sculpture of steel with a rock crystal/quartz lighted portion on top by Zee Haag (American, 20th century) sold for $2,500.

A women’s diamond and gold Rolex watch sold for $5,625.
