NEW YORK – Contemporary art and photography took the spotlight as Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques wrapped up a very successful year with their holiday auction Dec. 19.
A Romeo Tabuena (Filipino, b. 1921) painting titled Lavanderas, an acrylic on board done in 1966. sold for $8,400.
Two unframed photographs of New York City by Lee Friedlander (American, b. 1954) sold for $7,800. One was a view from the George Washington Bridge. The other was a street scene of a man taking a nap. Both were silver gelatin prints that measured 7 1/4 by 11 inches.
Another Friedlander photograph that received a great deal of preauction attention was the titled New Orleans, 1969, printed in 1978. This silver gelatin print (below), 7 1/2 inches by 11 1/4 inches, sold for $4,800.
An Art Deco poster by Andre Daude (1897-1979) titled Pianos Daude, 1926 (below), sold for $1,680.
Also in the art arena, an August von Medvey (Russian, 1814-1870) 19th century miniature painting of an aristocratic boy brought $2,040.
Various items continued to sell well in all categories throughout the auction, including furniture. A Paul Sormani petit commode with white marble shaped rectangular top sold for $4,200.
A loose 1.12-carat pear-shape diamond, accompanied by GIA certificate stating Color D and Clarity VS2, sold for $4,800.
A Napoleonic French artillery officer’s cuirass consisting of a breastplate, helmet, yataghan and a pig-sticker bayonet, sold for $2,160.
