DALLAS – Momentum just keeps building at Dallas Auction Gallery. What began 11 years ago as a local auction house and quickly grew to a strong regional presence, has now emerged as a strong international player in the auction world. Dallas Auction Gallery’s American and European Fine Art and Design Sale on Oct. 2 was a great success with international competition from hundreds of bidders in the saleroom, on the telephones and via the Internet. LiveAuctioneers.com provided Internet live bidding.

The auction featured an impressive selection of modern paintings, works on paper and prints. Works by Alexander Calder, Paul Jenkins and Sam Francis achieved strong prices. A highlight of the sale was an Alexander Calder gouache on paper, Untitled, 1969, depicting the graphic imagery and primary colors the artist is noted for, sold for $50,000. Three Calder color lithographs depicting pyramids and spirals fetched a total of $13,437.50. A Sam Francis acrylic on paper, Untitled Abstract, 1989, sold for $31,250 and a diminutive gouache on paper from his Pasadena box series painted in 1964, sold for an impressive $10,000. Phenomena Veronica, a 1968 acrylic on canvas by Paul Jenkins sold for $28,750 to a European buyer.

The second in a series of three spectacular fall sales, the evening’s other standouts included:

– Lot 108: Paul Jenkins, Phenomena Feel the Helm, acrylic on canvas, selling for $16,250 with a presale estimate of $9,000-$12,000;

– Lot 141: Ansel Adams, Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park, 1944, gelatin silver print, printed September 1978, selling for $34,375 with a presale estimate of $30,000-$50,000;

– Lot 279: Gerald Harvey, Texas Bluebonnets, oil on canvas, selling for $21,250 with a presale estimate $4,000-$6,000;

– Lot 71: Emil Bisttram, Abstract, gouache on paper, 1939, selling for $3437.50 with a presale estimate of $1,500-$2,500;

– Lot 66: Enrico Donati, Rosetta, oil and sand on canvas, selling for $10,000 with a presale estimate of $6,000-$8,000;

– Lot 74: Paul Horiuchi, Yellow Covers Blue, oil on paper and canvas collage on canvas, selling for $12,500 with a presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000;

– Lot 82: Jack Roth, Untitled, acrylic on paper, 1981, selling for $6875 with a presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000;

– Lot 95: Theodoros Stamos, I F J S XVII, acrylic on paper, selling for $12,500 with a presale estimate of $6,000-$8,000;

– Lot 220: Frank Stella, Figlefia, lithograph, etching, aquatint and relief in colors on handmade paper, 1994, selling for $6,250 with a presale estimate of $3,000-$4,000;

– Lot 222: Andy Warhol, Marilyn color screenprint, 1981, selling for $5,937.50 with a presale estimate of $3,000-$5,000;

– Lot 238: Albert Bierstadt, Mountain Landscape, oil on paper laid on board, selling for $16,250 with a presale estimate of $10,000-$15,000;

– Lot 240: Edwin Lord Weeks, In the Olive Grove, oil on canvas, 1876, selling for $11,250 with a presale estimate of $6,000-$8,000;

– Lot 258: William Acheff, Sweet Corn and Hot Chile, oil on canvas, selling for $21,250 with a presale estimate of $20,000-$30,000.
