DALLAS — Celebrating its 20th year in business in 2022, Dallas Auction Gallery enjoyed strong results in original fine art in its September 21 Fine and Decorative Art Auction.
The sale featured the estate of longtime Dallas dealer and collector Leonard E. Walley, including original Texas and Western art as well as his lifetime collection of early Native American portrait lithographs, Paul Jacoulet woodblock prints and early Japanese woodblock prints.
While strong results were had across categories, fine art led the sale, with animal paintings by William Skilling outperforming their estimates. His undated, signed oil on canvas Untitled (Elephant profile), for example, achieved $18,750 against an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.
Edouard Leon Cortes, whose work sells strongly in Dallas, maintained his momentum with La Place de l’Opera, an undated oil on canvas that realized the robust sum of $18,750.
Texas artists were popular in the sale, with Jose Vives-Atsara’s Landscape of Vail – Colorado, a 1982 oil on canvas, earning $6,875; and a 1974 Reveau Basset pastel, Mallards Landing, selling for $3,750.
Sterling silver continues to be a strong category at Dallas Auction Gallery. Lot 300, a three-piece J.E. Caldwell set of sterling silver table articles estimated at $600-$900, ultimately realized a surprising $4,160.
