NEW YORK – The first sale of the new year saw prices soar as bidders from across the country and abroad vied for stylish furniture, decorations and art in the popular Doyle at Home auction. Highlighting the January 11 sale was property from two prominent collections – the estate of legendary fashion executive Dawn Mello and property of a residence designed by Hutton Wilkinson, Tony Duquette Inc. The sale totaled a successful $867,350, more than doubling the pre-sale estimate of $263,280-$407,740, with an exceptional 99% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.
The Estate of Dawn Mello
Doyle was honored to auction property from the estate of Dawn Mello. An influential figure in luxury fashion and retailing, she transformed Bergdorf Goodman into a world-class luxury emporium showcasing the era’s hottest designers. Her collection of stylish art, furniture and decorations reflects her sophisticated and discerning eye for quality and design.
Property from the estate of Dawn Mello comprised lots 111-168 in the sale, and included Tete de Victoire, a bronze by French artist Henri Louis Bouchard that sold for $22,500 plus the buyer’s premium, and also Maeve, a signed oil-on-canvas by British-Canadian artist Archibald George Barnes, which realized $9,000 plus the buyer’s premium.
A Residence Designed by Hutton Wilkinson, Tony Duquette Inc.
As the creative director and president of Tony Duquette Inc., Hutton Wilkinson has designed stylish interiors for homes around the world, from his native California to Paris and Venice, as well as a palace in Jeddah and a penthouse in Bangkok. At the age of 18, he apprenticed under the legendary American design icon Tony Duquette, first as volunteer, then as a paid assistant designer before starting his own interior design firm and collaborating with Tony Duquette during the next 25 years.
Wilkinson is the author of four books on the Tony Duquette’s designs and is president of the Anthony and Elizabeth Duquette Foundation for the Living Arts, a non-profit private foundation dedicated to preserving and promoting the works of Tony Duquette. Property from a residence designed by Hutton Wilkinson, Tony Duquette Inc., comprised lots 385-421 in the sale. Featured were a group of upholstered green-painted wicker furniture that achieved $5,500 plus the buyer’s premium and a pair of Chinese Chippendale painted wood chairs that sold for $4,750 plus the buyer’s premium.
