NEW YORK – Doyle enjoyed success with a pair of mid-December auctions, one devoted to photography and the other to jewelry.
Its Photographs sale, held on December 13, showcased a wide range of fine examples spanning the history of the genre, from early photographs to contemporary works. The sale also included photobooks and albums focused on travel and related subjects.
A clear standout was Annie Leibovitz’ iconic 1978 photograph of Dan Akroyd and John Belushi as the Blues Brothers, which achieved $28,350, surpassing its $15,000-$25,000 estimate.

Doyle’s December auction of Important Jewelry, which took place on December 15, featured luxurious jewelry by the world’s most prestigious makers. Perfectly timed for the holidays, the sale lineup included Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb and Tiffany & Co. rings, necklaces, brooches and bracelets set with diamonds, colored stones, jade and natural pearls.
A Patek Philippe Reference 1518 gold chronograph sold for a record $828,600. During the years 1941-1954, Patek Philippe produced 281 examples of Reference no. 1518 with 215 examples in 18K gold, 58 in rose gold and four examples known to date in stainless steel. This was the world’s first wristwatch to be powered by a serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph. Before Patek Philippe achieved the engineering feat of releasing this complication in a wristwatch, it was only possible in the larger format of a pocket watch.
A stunning Van Cleef & Arpels platinum and diamond ring sold for $327,600, concluding a successful three-day jewelry event that posted a sale total in excess of $6.3 million.
