CHICAGO – Potter & Potter Auctions‘ April 20 A Study In Sherlock Sale achieved $220,000 in total. The 282-lot sale celebrating all things Arthur Conan Doyle (British, 1859-1930) represented the first offering of materials from the Sherlockian scholar Robert Hess. Future Hess sales are scheduled for early 2024.

Naturally enough, books penned by Doyle, including several first editions, claimed several of the top lot slots.

The Hound Of The Baskervilles, a first edition that was printed in London by George Newnes, Limited in 1902, was estimated at $2,000-$3,000 and earned $8,400. This example featured illustrations by Sidney Paget and included its original matching box.

A group of seven early American Doyle reprints, possibly pirated editions, was estimated at $500-$700 and sold for $6,000. They were published in the early 20th century by Donohue. The collection included The White Company, Micah Clarke, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four.

Other books and publications related to Doyle and Sherlock Holmes also performed well. Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet with illustrations by Nis Jessen (b. 1935-), was estimated at $100-$200 and brought $1,320. It was published in 2005 in Denmark by Hakon Holm Publishing. This first edition was number 60 of 1,000 copies and was signed by Jessen, who spent nine years making the illustrations.

Antique to vintage posters promoting Sherlock Holmes in performance also caught the eyes, and pocketbooks, of Sherlockians worldwide. Lot 132, a poster known as John Barrymore in Sherlock Holmes, was estimated at $4,000-$6,000 and sold for $9,000. Published in New York by J. H. Tooker Printing Company in 1922, this six-sheet poster for the film starring Barrymore as Holmes, Roland Young as Dr. Watson, and Gustav von Seyffertitz as Moriarty may be the only one extant.

A Sherlock Holmes poster printed in 1908 in Paris by Affiches Louis Galice was estimated at $1,000-$2,000 and made $5,760. The full-color example promoted the French version of William Gillette’s play, Sherlock Holmes.

Materials related to Jeremy Brett (English, 1933-1995), an actor best known for playing Sherlock Holmes on TV from 1984-1994, also posted strong prices. Brett’s screen-worn Sherlock Holmes tweed jacket finished at the respectable sum of $4,320. Made in London by Morris Angel & Son, Ltd. Theatrical Costumiers in 1984, this four button jacket with three sleeve buttons featured a cloth tag reading “Mr J Brett 16/8/84.”

Trouncing that result was Brett’s screen-worn, floor-length dressing gown (aka bathrobe), which was estimated at $1,000-$2,000 and went for $8,400. It was made in 1992 and was featured in Adventure of the Cardboard Box and possibly other episodes. Its tag read “Mr J Brett Aug 92.”
