In 1995, after graduating from Penn with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the Wharton School, Musk went to Stanford University, where he was accepted into the school’s Ph.D. program in materials science. He left after two days to join the Internet boom and launch his first startup.

Highlights from the sale included a 14K gold necklace with a small green emerald that Elon presented as a birthday gift to Gwynne, in late 1994. Included with the chain were two original candid photos of Musk and Gwynne — one depicting them standing with Musk’s mother, Maye, during a visit to New York City. The other pictured Musk and Gwynne posing with four other Resident Advisors before an end-of-the-year formal at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995, which sold for $51,008.

A birthday card with a multicolored, repeating Love You design on the front, neatly signed and inscribed by the future Tesla boss, “Happy Birthday, Jennifer (aka, Boo-Boo), Love, Elon,” sold for $16,643.

The 18 candid photos of the entrepreneur, sold individually, show a seldom-seem side of Musk.

“Elon Musk is one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the 21st century,” said RR Auction Executive VP Bobby Livingston. “There is very little Musk-related material that has come up for auction, and we will no doubt be seeing more soon with the success of this sale.”

“We are always thrilled and honored when one of our auctions can impact the lives of our consignors as this sale has done,” added Livingston.

The Fine Autograph and Artifacts auction by RR Auction began on August 12 and concluded on September 14. For more information, go to www.rrauction.com.
