PHILADELPHIA — Freeman’s newly reintroduced Pennsylvania Sale realized $1.3 million on Oct. 28. With competitive bidding throughout the sale, the 20th century design section performed especially well, achieving a 90% sell-through rate. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.
Impressive results were achieved for the single-owner collection of works by George Nakashima from the Estate of Sarabelle Salsburg including a Conoid Bench (Lot 147) which realized $46,875, well above its high estimate.
The sale included an exciting 100% sell-through rate for 12 lots by Wharton Esherick as part of the Hedgerow Theatre Collection.
“We were thrilled to achieve the highest-ever sale total at auction for a collection of Wharton Esherick’s work. We are pleased that today’s results will help the Hedgerow Theatre to fulfill their mission for years to come and that several of the works will be returning to Rose Valley so that visitors can continue to explore the connections between Esherick and Rose Valley,” said Freeman’s Tim Andreadis, head of sale.
Leading this section was the highly anticipated Important Thunder Table by Wharton Esherick, which achieved $187,500, exceeding its low estimate. Also from the Hedgerow Theatre Collection, the staircase (below) for Hedgerow Theatre sold for $81,250 more than double its high estimate; and eight Hammer Handle Chairs (lots 131-138) which all soared well above their estimates of $5,000-$7,000, achieving a collective $101,875.
Other notable highlights included the sale of a work attributed to Jacob Maentel, An Important Family Portrait: Mary Ann and John Michael Kitsmiller and Children (Lot 46), which realized $106,250 and surpassed its low estimate; a painting by Joseph Wright, Portrait of a Family: Likely the Gribble Family (Lot 23), which sold for $27,500, also surpassing its low estimate; and a pair of lanterns by Samuel Yellin (Lot 120) which achieved $7,500 more than six-times its high estimate.
