CHICAGO — Toomey & Co.‘s Early 20th Century Design sale on December 12 was keystoned by selections from the Frank Lloyd Wright collection of Domino’s Pizza founder Thomas Monaghan. A longtime admirer of Wright’s contributions to American design and culture, Monaghan founded The National Center for the Study of Frank Lloyd Wright, so the items he consigned were considered extremely choice selections for bidders.
As anticipated, all the Wright lots did well, though surprisingly, the top seller wasn’t the product of the famed architect at all. Rather, it was a set of glass and film negatives mostly created by Henry Fuermann & Sons, Wright’s photographer of choice to document his works. Totaling 222 pieces in all, the lot received nearly two dozen bids before hammering at $20,000 ($26,200 with buyer’s premium).
The sale’s absolute top lot was a majestic vitrine by Koloman Moser. Made in Austria around 1904, the unit was fashioned from burl wood, oak, mixed wood inlay, mother-of-pearl, mirrored glass, glass, silver and nickel. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000, it sold for $75,000 ($98,250 with buyer’s premium).
The auction included seven brilliant woodcut prints by the master of the medium, Gustave Baumann (1881-1971). The top seller was, as expected, Apple Blossoms from 1917. Signed by the artist, it was estimated at $5,000-$7,000 but sold for $15,000 ($19,650 with buyer’s premium).
Roycroft movement founder Elbert Hubbard was famously pro-temperance, even being quoted in local publications on how “dry” towns were always more prosperous: “I am sure that no-license [no liquor sales allowed] in East Aurora has been a big benefit to the Roycroft Shop. The boys have had more sleep, less liquor, more exercise and as a consequence have been better fitted to do good work. Many Roycroft boys have bank accounts now who never had before. And some of those who did have accounts have bigger balances.”
That comment makes the existence of this Roycroft cellarette all the more interesting. Designed as a small bar or wine storage unit, the example presented at Toomey was missing its bottle rack but was otherwise complete and original, and included its key. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000, the cellarette hammered at $26,000 ($34,060 with buyer’s premium).
