CHICAGO – Hindman held back-to-back art auctions in May, one a European art sale on May 18 and the other an American art sale on May 19, which together totaled $2.5 million.

European Art, May 18

Gustave Loiseau and Charles Amable Lenoir led Hindman’s European Art auction, with competitive bidding driving both lots to significantly exceed their estimates. Loiseau’s 1905 Le quai du Pothuis a Pontoise soared past its $80,000-$120,000 estimate to realize $201,600, while Charles Amable Lenoir’s 1902 life-size Pandora doubled its high estimate, selling for $176,400 and setting a new world auction record for the artist. Overall, the May 18 European Art auction realized $1,488,690, and 40 percent of the buyers were new to Hindman.

“We were delighted by the international attention the auction received,” said Hindman Director & Senior Specialist of European Art Madalina Lazen. “The Linden House collection provided exquisite, fresh-to-the-market material that attracted spirited bidding from new collectors around the world, highlighting the continued appetite for paintings of top quality.”

Top lots of the May 18 European Art auction also included a 1978 painting by Vu Cao Dam (French and Vietnamese, 1908–2000), L’anneau de jade, which achieved $100,800 against an estimate of $50,000-$70,000; and a 1997 Bernard Buffet (French, 1928–1999), Rue de village, which earned $97,020 against an estimate of $60,000-$80,000.

American Art, May 19

Gertrude Abercrombie, Milton Avery and Fern Coppedge led Hindman’s May 19 American Art auction. Abercrombie’s 1956 Giraffe and Moon climbed past its $50,000-$70,000 estimate to realize $182,700. This quintessential Abercrombie painting demonstrated her skill at depicting recognizable things of this world, such as the giraffe, in evocative and mysterious ways. Overall, the auction realized $1,013,481 and was 90% sold.

Hindman Specialist of Fine Art Pauline Archambault said, “We were delighted by the results throughout the sale, which highlighted that the market for American artists ranging from Impressionists to Regionalists and Modernists is strong. The variety of landscapes offered in the sale particularly confirmed the broad range of appeal that this material enjoys, from Coppedge’s idiosyncratic Impressionist strand to Avery’s distinct stylized mountain view. As for Giraffe and Moon, the price it achieved proved, once again, that Hindman is uniquely positioned to market Abercrombie’s work with the highest results.”

Milton Avery’s 1947 Mountain Lake led a strong offering of landscape paintings, achieving $126,000. Inspired by a family trip to the American Rockies, it is an impressive example of Avery’s luminous landscapes composed of broad swaths of color. Fern Coppedge’s The Lock Keeper’s Lodge and Winter Scene each brought $59,850. Both works are outstanding displays of her talent at capturing winter light in the Bucks Country region. Other top-performing landscapes included William Trost Richards’s 1902 Seascape, which attained $59,580.
