WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Milestone Auctions rolled out 1,340 lots of historically important military, civilian and sporting guns at its November 18 and November 19 Fall Premier Firearms sale. Among the top-tier entries were many exquisite Colt rarities, such as the documented Colt 1847 Martial ‘Walker’ D Co., .44 caliber percussion revolver with the serial number 218. This model was developed through a collaboration between Samuel Colt and Texas Ranger Captain Samuel H. Walker, national hero of the Texas-Mexico Wars. Only 1,100 were made, and fewer than 100 are known to have survived. It sold within estimate for $70,000 ($81,900 with buyer’s premium).
Any serious Winchester collector would want to own an 1897 advertising display known as the ‘double W’ board. A recent discovery in all-original condition, the shell-packed advertisement is adorned with A. B. Frost vignettes and gold-overlay borders. Bidders sent it rocketing to $57,500 ($69,000 with buyer’s premium), just shy of its high estimate.
Boasting a Hollywood connection, a B. Searcy 500 Nitro Express double rifle was #4 of a four-gun set manufactured in 1995 and sold privately by the manufacturer. Two rifles from the auction set were used in the movie The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Rifle #4 had all-matching numbers and an action that was profusely engraved with scenes of dangerous game. Together with its felt-lined, partitioned luggage case, it sold for $27,000 ($31,590 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.
A Russian contract Colt 1911 .45 caliber pistol, manufactured in 1916 and bearing factory-applied Cyrillic markings, was accompanied by a 2020 Colt factory letter signed and certified by historian Beverly Haynes. The document indicated that the firearm had been sent to the Russian government on 9/2/1916 in a shipment of 5,000. Pistols of its type are known to have had an extremely low survival rate, hence they are rarely encountered in the marketplace. It sold for $20,000 ($23,400 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.
German World War II firearms secured very pleasing prices overall. A Walther World War II Party Leader PPK pistol in .65 ACP caliber displayed Party Leader brown plastic grips and a loaded chamber indicator. It was accompanied by an LOA hand-signed by the noted author and firearms expert James Rankin. The pistol realized $10,000 ($12,000 with buyer’s premium) against a $4,000-$6,000 estimate.
