Indian Chief lamp achieves $18,400 at Jeffrey Evans auction

Lot 20A: Bisque Native American Chief / Indian figural miniature lamp, which is considered to be the only known complete example. Price realized: $18,400, a record price for miniature lighting. Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates image.
Two English cameo-glass lamps attributed to Stevens & Williams also brought strong prices due to stiff collector interest. One example, a three-color overlay in white, pink and yellow, decorated with daisies and butterflies, sold for $14,950. A cinnamon red and white two-color example with maidenhair fern patterning, sold for $13,800. Both lamps were estimated at $6,000-$9,000.
A signed Thomas Webb & Sons’ Queen Burmeseware miniature lamp sold for $8,050, also surging beyond its $4,000-6,000 estimate. Other English miniature examples realized excellent results, with two air-trap mother-of-pearl satin models doing very well. A ribbed swirl glass example attributed to Stevens & Williams, in light-green to yellow ombred hues in the shade and raspberry-hued body, sold for $4,600, and a diamond example cased in yellow, on a base with three applied feet, which sold for $4,312.50. Both were estimated at $2,000-$3,000. All five of these examples were formerly in the collection of Bob Schafer.
A fine selection of fairy lamps from the collection of Lloyd and Nannette Graham of California also did very well. The category was led by a Webb Burmese pyramid-size dome example decorated with hand-painted polychrome birds on branch decoration, raised in a silver-plated stand marked for Pairpoint Manufacturing that sold for $2,070 against the $300-$500 estimate. Among the selection of hanging lamps, a Charles Parker Starpoint petticoat brass-frame library lamp sold for $4,025 against an estimate of $1,500-$2,500.
The 634-lot auction realized $328,878 from 1,200 registered bidders located in 26 countries.
Following the sale, auctioneer Jeffrey S. Evans said, “We were very pleased with the in-house crowd for this sale. The numbers were boosted by our hosting of the Night Light Club annual seminar in conjunction with the auction. Collectors attended from all across the United States including California, South Dakota, Michigan, Texas and Florida, along with several from Canada. This certainly demonstrates the importance of the Hulsebus collection. After the sale, everyone told us they are looking forward with great anticipation to the second Hulsebus auction that we will hold May 31, 2014.”
Evans thought the $18,400 sales price for lot 20A, the bisque Native American Chief represents a new record high for a miniature lamp at auction. Evans concluded his observations on events in the salesroom by saying, “We were also very pleased with the interest in and prices achieved for the Graham collection of fairy lamps. There were several serious collectors in attendance and strong action on the phones and internet. The remainder of the Graham’s collection of art glass will be included in our winter glass auction on Jan. 18, 2014.”
