BIRMINGHAM, U.K. – A Boucheron Kashmir sapphire ring hammered at Fellows Auctioneers in Birmingham, England for £175,000 on October 12. Estimated at £60,000-£80,000, the Sixties jewel drew worldwide attention before selling for a price of £218,500 ($258,800) including buyer’s premium.

Kashmir sapphires have acquired a near-legendary status due to their lustrous cornflower color, soft velvety texture and extreme rarity. Deposits of the sapphires were first discovered and mined in the early 1880s, following a landslide in a remote valley. Hearing of these sapphires, which were brighter than any previously discovered, the Maharaja of Kashmir purchased the mine and worked it for just five years, between 1882 and 1887, when the supply was depleted.

A new mine was later opened and periodic mining has been carried out since, but the vast majority of Kashmir sapphires offered on the market today were mined during this short period late in the 19th century.

Certification is a must. The sapphire and diamond ring offered at Fellows’ Fine Jewellery auction on October 12 came with a report from the GCS (Gemmological Certification Services) stating that the stone weighed 6.76 carats, was from Kashmir and showed no signs of heat treatment.

The ring was made by the Parisian watch and jewelry house Boucheron in the 1960s, and the quality of the mount compliments the magnificent gemstone at its center. The sapphire was surrounded by more than two carats of diamonds and was set in platinum.

DUBLIN, Ireland – An important piece of Irish marquetry furniture scheduled for auction in County Louth was withdrawn from sale at the eleventh hour after a deal was struck with the National Museum of Ireland.

Dubbed the Blessington Commode and considered the masterpiece of the enigmatic German-Irish cabinetmaker John Kirkhoffer, it had been estimated at €100,000-€150,000 ($105,800-$158,800) as part of the Country House auction held by Adam’s at Townley Hall, County Louth on October 9-10. The price paid by the museum has not been disclosed.

It was the renowned furniture historian and collector R.W. Symonds who first suggested in 1956 that a curious group of early to mid-18th century ‘continental’ cabinets with seaweed marquetry inlay had an Irish origin. In 1997, the Irish furniture specialist Desmond Fitzgerald demonstrated that this was indeed the case – concluding that they were supplied by the same workshop in Dublin. However, it was not until 2007 (shortly after the publication of the seminal work Irish Furniture by Desmond Fitzgerald and James Peill) that a name emerged. This was John Kirkhoffer, whose signature and the date 1732 was found on a desk in the Art Institute of Chicago.

Kirkhoffer (his name appears in different spellings) was probably the son of Franz Ludwig Kirkhover, who arrived in Ireland as a refugee in 1709 after escaping the war-torn Rhineland-Palatinate area. It is estimated that 800 German Protestant families came to Ireland.

The Kirkhoffer family of cabinetmakers and inlayers arrived in the counties of Kerry and Limerick before ultimately settling in Dublin. John Kirkhoffer is recorded there in the early 18th century, running a workshop that lasted into the 19th century. The Blessington Commode shares the same Berainesque marquetry inlay as other pieces in Kirkhoffer’s growing oeuvre.

Dated to circa 1745, the top is inlaid with the arms of the Anglo-Irish peer William Stewart, Earl of Blessington (1709-1769). He and his wife Eleanor FitzGerald of County Cork were considered among Dublin’s most fashionable couples, living in Henrietta Street and a great mansion house at Blessington, County Wicklow, which was razed in the 1798 Rebellion. Stewart (previously Viscount Mountjoy) was named the Earl of Blessington on December 7, 1745, perhaps the opportune moment to commission a suite of furniture emblazoned with his new title.

A spokesperson for the National Museum of Ireland told Antiques Trade Gazette it “does not normally discuss the costs of any acquisition” but described the commode as “a significant addition to the museum’s collection of 18th-century Irish furniture.” It added: “Continental in style and made of Irish materials for the first Earl of Blessington, it is representative of the rich cultural life and booming economy of Dublin’s Georgian period. The National Museum of Ireland does not currently hold any work by Kirkhoffer and as such this was an important acquisition for the national collection.”

This is the second piece of Kirkhoffer furniture to be offered for sale this year – and both have gone to Irish institutions. A circa-1725 George I walnut and marquetry ‘architectural’ secretaire cabinet, attributed to John Kirkhoffer, was part of Bonhams’ Connoisseur’s Library sale in London in February. Estimated at £20,000-£30,000, it sold for £18,000 (£22,950, or $27,900 including buyer’s premium) and was donated to the Irish Museum of Time in Waterford. It is one of four similar cabinets, all pictured in Irish Furniture, which include the example in Chicago and another in the V&A reputed to have belonged to the satirist Jonathan Swift (1667-1745).

STEWARTSVILLE, N.J. – The story of still and motion picture cameras produced in the Soviet Union (1917-1991) is one largely focused on industrial trade secret theft and outright copycatting when viewed in retrospect. Stealing designs by German manufacturers such as Zeiss at first, and later stealing Japanese models, came to characterize most of the Soviet output. Today, most Soviet-era cameras — produced in very low numbers due to their centralized economy and limited internal customer base beyond the government — are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Dennis Auction Service brought a Soviet-era MK-002 motion picture camera suite to auction on September 29 with very little information available. It’s unclear which camera design this is based upon, but it is possible it cribs from that of the legendary Mitchell BNC (Blimped Noiseless Camera), which was used by every major film studio during the late 1930s through the 1960s.

The suite appears to be a complete cinematographer’s example, with camera body, film magazine, lens and focus puller, and additional components and parts. Though undated, it appears to be from the 1970s, and would have been used for both motion picture and television filming as well as possible newsgathering in the era just before the dawn of videotape.

Estimated at only $150-$300, the suite sold for a whopping $7,000 ($8,750 with buyer’s premium).

MONTREAL, Canada – The much-admired Chinese iron oxide glaze known as ‘tea-dust’ or chayemo had its origins in the Tang dynasty, but it reached its apogee under the Qing. The best high-fired tea-dust porcelains are particularly associated with the reigns of the Yongzheng (1722-35) and Qianlong (1735-96) emperors and the genius of Tang Ying (1682-1756), the revered supervisor of the imperial kilns. Part of the appeal of the glaze was that it appeared ancient and could be used to imitate the patina of archaic bronze.

The 9in (22cm) bottle vase that appeared for sale at Kavanagh Auctions on September 30 had an impressed six-character Qianlong mark. Clearly enough, several of those who viewed it deemed it of the period, as it raced away from its CA$20-CA$15,000 estimate to sell for CA$37,000 (CA$45,510, or $33,100).

ATLANTA – Born in New York and raised in the Civil War years, James Edward Kelly (1855-1933) had a lifelong interest in American military history and the men who fought it. Many of his sculptures depict moments from the defining conflicts of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Defenders Of New Haven, July 5, 1779 commemorates the band of some 150 patriots who attempted to ward off a British attack at the height of the Revolutionary War. The three figures represent a student, a farmer, and a militiaman.

The Defenders’ Monument, as it is known, was first mooted in 1891 by the New Haven Colony Historical Society and the Connecticut Sons of the American Revolution. However, although a suitable site was chosen in 1896, fundraising stalled, and it was only in 1910 when it was finally erected.

A 2ft bronze, described as being ‘tabletop’ size, offered for sale at Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery on October 14 appears to be part of the commissioning story. It was signed in the mold and dated December 21, 1905, and additionally marked ‘Cast For George Hope Ryder MD, Yale 1894.’ Hope Ryder (1874-1946) was a well-known New Jersey obstetrician and Kelly’s most important patron. The Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Museum includes a collection of correspondence between the two men. This seemingly unique cast was offered with an estimate of $2,000-$4,000 and hammered at $6,500 ($8,125 including buyer’s premium).
