La Belle Epoque reports excellent debut auction

NEW YORK – Manhattan’s newest full-service boutique auction house, La Belle Epoque Auction Gallery, held its premiere sale on Saturday, February 5. It featured a selection spanning fine and contemporary art, antiques, furniture, mid-century Modern, decorative items and collectibles from multiple estates.

Decorative arts highlights were led by an Art Deco-style bronze figural table lamp, which sold for $5,120. It was made after a model by Pierre Le Faguays (French, 1892-1962) and centered on a nude figure posed in front of draped swags.

Also performing well was an assorted group of 20th-century Limoges porcelain table service articles that had been retailed by Tiffany. The group sold for $9,600. In addition, a 20th-century Mexican sterling silver charger measuring 20in in diameter realized $1,525.

Mid-century Modern material was well represented in the sale. Clear triumphs were achieved by a Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller bookcase dating to the late 20th century, which sold for $1,280, and a pair of leather and chrome LC2 Club Chairs by Le Corbusier for Cassina that rose to $768.

Chief among the fine and contemporary art offerings was a polychromed oil on canvas by Charles Levier (French, 1920-2003), picturing two women, each slyly assessing the other. The work sold for $2,050.

Big winners within the selection of original vintage posters was a Cachou Lajaunie poster that achieved $3,580 and an “Automobiles Renault” poster that sold for $2,048. Also, an original circa-1932 “Coca Cola Gas Today” metal sign went for $1,536.

Many already know the La Belle Epoque name from its reputation as New York area’s top vintage poster dealer and gallery, specializing in authentic Art Nouveau, Art Deco, mid-century and other posters printed between the 1860s and the 1990s. La Belle Epoque Vintage Posters will continue to be maintained as a separate business.
