NEW YORK – Doyle held a highly successful auction of Important Jewelry on October 21 that saw prices soaring amid spirited bidding from around the globe. Showcased were luxurious jewels by the world’s most prestigious makers, including Graff, Cartier, Rene Lalique, David Webb, Van Cleef & Arpels and Tiffany & Co. from prominent estates and distinguished collections.
With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled a stunning $7,468,398, far surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $3,603,700-5,563,300, with an exceptional 97% sold by lot and value.
Highlighting the sale was a sapphire and diamond ring by Graff centering a dazzling Burma sapphire weighing 19.05 carats. Determined bidders drove the ring soaring past its estimate of $150,000-$250,000 to achieve a remarkable $453,600. Property from the estate of an Italian philanthropic family, the ring was accompanied by a G.I.A. certificate indicating that the sapphire showed no gemological evidence of heat enhancement.
A feature of the sale was a rare offering of important Art Nouveau jewelry by the legendary French jeweler and designer Rene Lalique. From the collection of jewelry scholar Dora Jane Janson was a remarkable circa-1902 bracelet of gold, carved opal, enamel and aquamarines designed as dragonflies amid flowering vines that achieved a strong $340,200 against an estimate of $200,000-$400,000.
From the collection of an important jewel collector camee two exceptional pieces. A circa-1904 gold, carved horn, enamel and moonstone necklace with plaques depicting horned beetles realized $252,000, doubling its $75,000-$150,000 estimate. And a circa-1904 gold, opal, plique-a-jour enamel, glass and diamond dragonfly pendant estimated at $60,000-$80,000 sold for $226,800 – a world auction record for a Rene Lalique dragonfly pendant.
The sale offered a selection of high-carat-weight diamonds that attracted spirited bidding. From the estate of heiress and sportswoman Laura Bostwick was a stunning marquise-shaped diamond weighing 8.34 carats, D color, VS1 clarity that sold for $390,600 against a $300,000-$500,000 estimate. From the collection of a Philadelphia lady came a ring set with a pear-shaped diamond weighing 9.23 carats, D color, VS1 clarity that realized $340,200, surpassing its estimate of $200,000-$300,000.
