NEW YORK – A pioneer in Vietnamese art, Lê Thị Lựu (1911-1988) was one of the first women to be accepted at the Fine Arts School in Hanoi, founded by Victor Tardieu. His acceptance of Lê set her career on a trajectory of success in art and ultimately as an instructor, where she personally oversaw the training of Phan Kich (Phan Kế An), the renowned Vietnamese painter and lacquer artist.

Lê relocated to France in the late 1930s as part of the “Vietnamese Four,” a group that included Mai Trung Thứ, Lê Phổ and Vũ Cao Đàm, all of whom would go on to success in the French art world. Lê’s output focused on traditional subject matter such as mothers and children, leading her to become a pioneer in Vietnamese Modernism.

Her Mother and Child is an undated mixed-media piece on silk measuring 20 by 16in. It appeared in the Fine Art and Antique Auction held by Antique Arena on September 23 with an estimate of only $100-$150, like many other lots in the sale. When the hammer fell, an internet bidder had won the lot at $40,000 ($51,200 with buyer’s premium).

GENOA, Italy – Storage vessels, or albarello, were among the most frequently produced maiolica wares in late medieval and Renaissance Italy. Made in standard shapes, generally narrower at the middle to make them easy to hold, most would have been produced in long sets for storage and display in a pharmacy or shop.

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – The most eagerly contested lot at Quinn’s Auction Galleries on September 22 was this portrait of a woman by the Boston School impressionist Lilian Coleman Westcott Hale (1880-1963). It hammered for $21,000 ($26,670 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $2,500-$3,500.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut as Lilian Westcott, Hale studied under William Merritt Chase at his Shinnecock, Long Island, summer school before taking classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with Edmund Tarbell and Philip Leslie Hale, her future husband. Living most of her life in Dedham, Massachusetts, she was particularly admired for her skills with the charcoal stick and her depictions of women in intimate, contemplative poses. This 3ft by 2ft 4in oil, signed at the top right, shows another of her signature techniques, placing a floral still life on a windowsill in the midground to reveal the landscape beyond.

SARASOTA, Fla. – The September 24 sale at Helmuth Stone Gallery yielded a textbook Chinese sleeper – this 11in (29cm) cinnabar red lacquer circular box and cover. Described as “exquisitely carved,” but with a significant break and loss to the side, it was estimated at $200-$400 but hammered for $17,000 ($21,250 with buyer’s premium).

This rare box is one of a distinct group of carved lacquer pieces decorated with insects, reptiles, and also pine, bamboo and plum blossoms – the so-called Three Friends of Winter, which continue to thrive as the cold days deepen.

According to the features listed by the collector and scholar Sir Harry Mason Garner in the 1979 book Chinese Lacquer, the unworked dark background is one typically associated with earlier carved lacquers from the late Yuan and early Ming period, with this design – probably based on a Southern Song dynasty prototype – associated with Yunnan in southwestern China. In better condition, it could have made six figures.

GENOA, Italy – The Design sale held by Cambi Casa D’Aste on September 25 was topped by this Afra and Tobia Scarpa easy chair. It hammered for €6,000 (€8,100, or $8,500 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of €500-€600 ($527-$633).

The model 925 low chair was designed by Afra Bianchin and Tobias Scarpa for designer furniture-maker Cassina in 1966. Inspired by a sketch made in 1943 by the architect Carlo Scarpa (Tobias’ father), the idea was to marry a cube with a petal. This example, probably dating to the late Sixties, is made with mounded plywood and a walnut frame.

Another Afra and Tobia Scarpa lot, a set of 12 tubular steel and black molded plastic Dessau chairs, hammered for €4,500 (€6,075, or $6,400 with buyer’s premium). Designed for B&B Italia in 1973, the Dessau chair was a tribute to Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and the city where his Bauhaus building is located.
