WINDSOR, Conn. – With a full slate of top-quality New Year’s Day auctions from which to choose, more than 2,000 LiveAuctioneers bidders set their sights on Nadeau’s first sale of 2017, spending more than $200,000 on art and antiques. Running the gamut from exceptionally fine jewelry to a 1966 Ford Thunderbird, 675 choice lots were listed in Nadeau’s online catalog. Purchases made through LiveAuctioneers represented 24.3% of the lots sold in total.
The top lot of the sale was a ladies’ platinum ring set with three emerald-cut diamonds. Each of the precious stones weighed approximately 1.8 to 1.9 carats. Against an estimate of $25,000-$25,000, it sold for $37,200. All prices quoted are inclusive of buyer’s premium.
Immediately following was a Cartier Art Deco sapphire and diamond ring with the coveted jeweler’s name signed on the shank edge. It surpassed its estimate to sell for $21,600.
In total, the auction contained 150 lots of diamonds and jewelry, as well as 33 watches, including a Patek Philippe minute repeater chronometer in an 18K gold closed-face case (shown at top of page). The coveted timepiece features a dial with two stopwatch hands, plus a second hand dial marked Patek Philippe & Co. Geneva. Against a pre-sale estimate of $15,000-$20,000, it went to a LiveAuctioneers bidder for $32,500.
The auction estimate of $1,000-$2,000 on Jerome Myers’ (1867-1940) oil-on-panel titled Study in Norfolk Street, New York was quickly dashed as bidding escalated to $21,600.
A LiveAuctioneers bidder prevailed on a pair of Percival Leonard Rosseau (1859-1937) oil-on-board paintings of sporting dogs titled Setters Ready for the Hunt and Dogs at Play. The artist-signed paintings, each executed in 1900, sold together online for $10,625.
Furniture and decorative art proved popular with LiveAuctioneers bidders, as well. A pair of handsome Empire round mahogany stands with marble tops and claw feet started and ended their bidding run online, reaching a final selling price of $7,500.
A Baldwin 9-ft-long ebony concert grand piano that came with two tufted benches hit a high note on LiveAuctioneers, selling for $8,125.
A tremendously busy and successful sale, Nadeau’s Annual New Year’s Day Auction 2017 attracted 1,356 live bids and 1,527 absentee bids through LiveAuctioneers. And importantly, 986 underbids were facilitated through LiveAuctioneers. The online catalog was a heavily frequented spot, drawing more than 104,000 page views from 72,468 visitors.
