GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Contemporary art and Mid-century Modern furniture took center stage at Roland NY‘s first sale of 2023 on January 7, with a beautiful oil on canvas by artist Martiros Saryan (Armenian, 1880-1972) being the high seller of the day.
The Saryan painting of a mountain and valley landscape with oxen and plow in the foreground was signed at the lower left, dated 1921 and offered with a provenance certificate. Estimated at $10,000-$15,000, bidding quickly soared and ultimately settled at $40,625.
Also doing well was a Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964) painting titled Clown, signed at the lower left with labels to the reverse, which realized $5,000.
The decorative arts selection was distinguished by a Mary Ann “Toots” Zynsky (American, b. 1951-) multicolor filet-de-verre vessel, composed of fused and thermoformed glass threads. Monogrammed with a “Z,” it earned $7,500. Equally notable was a Le Coultre Marina angel fish clock, having 16 jewels with gilt metal decoration and a stepped base, and signed on its face and its movement. It sold for $1,125.
Roland’s impressive Mid-century Modern furniture choices included an Adrian Pearsall walnut Crescent lounge chair and ottoman, graced with what are described as “grasshopper” arc legs around the recently upholstered Hallingdal upholstery. Rare to be offered with its ottoman, it went for $4,062.
Another strong performer was a pair of circa-1970s Milo Baughman swivel lounge chairs with blue upholstery on the swivel and tilt action seats. The pair brought $4,375.
Notable antique furniture on offer on January 7 included a 19th-century French gilt-decorated curved panel single door vitrine or display cabinet, which sold for $2,250.
