Mid-century modern furniture sets the pace at Capo’s opening fall sale

NEW YORK – Select pieces of contemporary and mid-century modern furniture once again took the lead, along with Persian carpets and fine art, at Capo Auction’s Fine Art and Antiques sale Sept. 24.

Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.com.

Capo Auction has done increasingly well in the modern furniture arena this year. When these items came up, so did the excitement level at the auction, with quick bidding in the room, online and on the phones. Highlights included a Knoll nine-piece L-shaped leather sectional sofa with matching ottoman (above) that sold for $4,612.50; a Mies Van Der Rohe day bed in brown leather upholstery $1,560; two contemporary black tables with glass tops on a painted metal bases (below), $4,612.50; and an Art Deco marble top bronze coffee table having a rectangular marble top on four scrolled bronze supports, selling for $2,200.

Two Persian carpets also did well. The northwest Persian (Iranian) carpet, allover repeating floral and geometric pattern on a brown field within a tan and rose colored border with floral decoration, 26 feet by 16 feet, sold for $12,300. A Lavar Kirman carpet, allover foliate decoration on a tan field within a similarly colored and decorated border, 23 feet 8 inches x 11 feet 10 inches, sold for $5,700.

A selection of fine art also got a good deal of attention. A Jeffery Francis Beardsall (British, b. 1940) untitled abstract oil on canvas (below) measuring 72 by 60 inches sold for $4,612.50. A John Thomas Peele (British, 1822-1897) Peasant Girl Holding Flowers oil on canvas, 1872, 39 1/2 by 27 1/2 inches, sold for $4,200. An after Alexander Calder tapestry, 1975, from the edition of 100 by C.A.C. Publications and Bon Art, Guatemala, 57 x 83 inches, sold for $2,880.

Decorative items continued to sell well in all categories throughout the auction, including a 16-inch Baccarat eye vase in its original box, which brought $2,200, and a Tibetan bronze Buddha seated in dyanosura on a triangular shape plinth, 31 1/2 inches, which sold for $660.

An Omega Speedmaster watch having a black dial with baton hours, three subsidiary dials and a stainless steel band sold for $2,160.
