Moran cites increased bidding in Traditional Collector sale

MONROVIA, Calif. – Moran’s first Traditional Collector auction of the year realized strong prices for rare and wonderful examples of art and design across categories. Top-quality furnishings, décor, sculpture, and rugs commanded attention and brought high prices at the sale May 3. Moran’s transition to online sales has not only been smooth but has shown a marked increase in participation, boding well for the future of the market. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.

American craftsmanship was on full display with exciting selections in the auction. A faithfully restored 1935 Ford Phaeton (above), consigned from its longtime Southern California owner, brought $40,625 (all prices realized include Moran’s buyer’s premium). A gorgeous Steinway Model M grand piano struck a chord with buyers, one of whom paid $6,875 for the instrument. A fine ship portrait skillfully depicted in rough seas brought $4,375 (below).

Fine décor and sculpture from around the globe realized strong prices throughout the day. The honor of top lot went to a stunning Chinese automaton table clock. Considerable interest before the sale led to a bidding war, pushing the clock past its $25,000-$35,000 estimate to bring $62,500.

A finely carved Italian marble statue will make a great addition to the buyer’s home, bringing $11,875. A beautifully modeled sculpture of a veiled woman by famed artist Jean Leon Gerome brought $34,375.

A silk Qum rug with a finely woven field caused a bidding war when it hit the block, ultimately selling for $5,625.

Top-quality furnishings found a ready buyer at the auction. A wonderfully made French marquetry cabinet with its crisp gilt-bronze mounts sold for $10,625.
