CHICAGO – The market for Murano glass and mid-century design continued to demonstrate its resilience in the hammer prices seen at Wright December 13 with its Important Italian Glass and Design sale. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) was an Italian architect and follower of Frank Lloyd Wright. Revered in his native country, Scarpa was a rebel, refusing to take the postwar Italian government’s test for architecture. He spent the rest of his days designing, but had to have a papered architect sign off on his plans. From 1932 until 1947, Scarpa created an incredible collection of glass items, working with the legendary Venini glassworks, which are highly treasured today. Certainly one collector felt this way at the Wright sale, bidding this no. 3664 Pennellate vase from 1947 to a hammer price of $85,000 ($111,350 with buyer’s premium). The opaque and transparent vase had been estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

The metal designs of Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) are always strong performers at auction, and his 1975 Untitled (Monumental Gong) is no exception. Estimated at $50,000-$70,000, the massive (120 by 36 by 3in) hanging design in bronze hit its top estimate after a short series of bids ($91,700 with buyer’s premium). Like all Bertoia works, the gong work is included in the Harry Bertoia Catalogue Raisonné.

Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) was a Frenchman who wore many hats: noted metal worker and designer, self-taught architect and unofficially, something of an engineer, which informed his works with a technical feel. Nowhere better is this seen than in his Demountable ‘Semi-Metal’ chair, No. 300, dating to circa 1952. Made from enameled steel, beech plywood and rubber and aluminum, the design looks like it emerged from an aerospace factory. Estimated at $25,000-$35,000, it hammered for $65,000 ($85,150 with buyer’s premium).

Some of the most memorable and minimalist furniture designs to emerge between the postwar period and the 1970s were from the minds of husband-and-wife powerhouses Erwine and Estelle Laverne. The Tulip chair, the Daffodil chair, the Lily chair – all are Laverne designs, often copied and never equalled. Wright’s sale had a variation of the Lily design (model LF-120) featuring artwork of the couple’s daughter emblazoned to the back. More than two dozen bids drove the chair to $16,000 ($20,960 with buyer’s premium).
