BLOIS, France – An ensemble of modernist rosewood furniture by the designer and architect Pierre Chareau (1883-1950) excelled at the Valoir Pousse-Cornet auction house on February 24.

Recently discovered in Touraine, the suite sold as three lots – a set of chairs, a sideboard, and a table – in the auction of 20th-century decorative art and design in Blois. The fresh-to-market ensemble was formerly in the collection of the director of the company Société NMPP.

The set of eight chairs in rosewood veneer and burgundy moleskin are examples of Chareau’s MF275 model, created in 1924, which featured on the designer’s stand at the Salon d’Automne two years later and was chosen by famous Chareau clients such as the Comte and Comtesse de Noailles and Jean Dalsace. The octet had an estimate of €7,000-€10,000 ($7,580-$10,830) but hammered at €100,000 and sold for €124,000 ($134,280) with buyer’s premium.

Chareau, who worked with the Parisian branch of Waring and Gillow before setting up on his own in 1919, is known for the sometimes ingenious ball bearing mechanisms he integrated into his creations. An extending dining table, model MA788, measuring 4ft 7in (1.4m) and set on a double arch base, made €32,700 ($35,410) with buyer’s premium, while a sideboard from the same period, a variant of model MA788, took €13,020 ($14,100) with buyer’s premium.
