BOSTON — A bright yellow custom “Cloud” guitar commissioned by Prince sold for $132,868, according to Boston-based RR Auction. The guitar was custom-made by Minneapolis luthier Kurt Nelson in the 1990s. The neck-through guitar features a bright yellow finish, golden hardware, and cloud-inspired design to body, horn, and headstock, with a unique series of 18 black Prince symbols to fretboard and top of neck.
Also included was material related to its construction: Nelson’s original clear plastic guitar pattern sheet, matching Cloud outline; a Plexiglas cut-out of the upper body with telltale upper horn; and a yellow handkerchief given to Nelson by Paisley Park to color match with the guitar.
“It’s an iconic and simply gorgeous Prince “Cloud” guitar that perfectly embodies the flash and flamboyance of its legendary owner,” said Bobby Livingston, Executive VP at RR Auction.
Addition highlights from the sale include, but are not limited by:
- Prince custom-made Purple Rain white ruffled shirt sourced from the mother of Sheila E. sold for $75,000.
- A scarce factory-sealed original 1987 U.S. first pressing of Prince’s “The Black Album” sold for $30,990.
- Prince’s stage-worn Versace sunglasses from his Jam of the Year tour sold for $15,128.
- Prince’s custom-made tan high-heeled boots sold for $14,092.
The Fine Autograph and Artifacts sale featuring Prince from RR Auction began on February 19 and concluded March 10.
