NEW YORK – Select pieces of contemporary art, including an abstract by Eric Orr, along with a rare Gibson acoustic guitar and a stunning Steinway piano, all took the spotlight at Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques’ April 22 spring auction. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.
There was a huge amount of preauction interest in a custom Gibson guitar (above), possibly a 1928 Nick Lucas L1 or L2 model, that featured a rosewood body and rhinestone inserts. This rare instrument sold for $4,800.
Early in the day, the fine art portion of the auction generated a great deal of bidding online and on the phones, with an Eric Orr (American, 1939-1998) oil on canvas titled Abstract Composition, selling for $5,700, while an attributed to Otto Dix (German, 1891-1969) self portrait (below) bringing $3,000.
The excitement continued with a Steinway Grand piano model M, serial number 185559, which sold for $4,200.
Jewelry remained as strong at Capo Auction as a 16-inch-long18K gold double rolo link chain necklace signed Wempe (below) sold for $3,300 and a Cartier diamond solitaire ring, 18K yellow gold, 1.50 carats, sold for $3,000.
A 12-inch Dresden porcelain portrait vase (below) titled Epanquissement Asti and decorated by Ambrosius Lamm sold $1,440.
In furniture, a stunning set of four Louis XVI-style gilt wood chairs, each with cartouche shaped back, padded arms, serpentine front seat and cabriole legs, sold $3,600 and a pair of 4-foot-tall Globe Wernicke bookcases, each with three glass-front shelves over a single long drawer, went for $2,600.
