Scarce Hermès Birkin bag brings £24,244 at Fellows

BIRMINGHAM, UK – A black Hermès Birkin HAC handbag has sold for £24,244 ($31,434) and has broken a house record for the sale of a Birkin bag at Fellows Auctioneers. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium and fees.

The 2013 matte black Porosus Crocodile Birkin HAC 40 bag formed part of Fellows’ Designer Collection auction, which took place in Birmingham on Monday, Feb. 24. The bag sold for a hammer price of £19,000. The price trumps the previous house record set by the family-run auctioneers, which was the sale of a Rouge Porosus Crocodile Birkin 35 handbag for £22,968.00 (including fees) in October 2016.

The special Matte Porosus Crocodile HAC 40 handbag features rare ruthenium hardware. Ruthenium is a polished silver hardware, which is darker than the standard Palladium and is much rarer to find. It is usually applied to custom bags or unique designs such as this elegant item.

Known as the king of the exotics, Porosus Crocodile fetches the highest prices on the primary and secondary markets – hence the number of bids placed on this sought-after bag.

“This rare Hermès Birkin is one of the best handbags we have ever had go under the hammer. For us to generate so much interest and for the bag to sell for a great amount is a pleasure to see,” said Sophie Higgs, designer collection specialist at Fellows Auctioneers. “Since we started our Designer Collection auctions a number of years ago the interest we are getting in top-end bags gets stronger and stronger. Our first Designer Collection of 2020 was incredibly popular and I hope it’s a trend that continues.”
