DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Kodner Galleries’ first auction of 2016, which featured a prominent estate, was a big success with 95 percent of the 350 lots being sold. The Jan. 13 auction featured the contents of the Van Waveren estate, an architecturally significant Addison Mizner designed Palm Beach mansion overlooking the ocean and included fine 18th and 19th century Italian and French furniture, art, decoration and estate jewelry.

The high-style furniture and decoration brought out numerous leading interior designers, many of whom purchased multiple lots for design projects. Art and antiques dealers were also among the successful buyers. Gallery bidders included socialites from Miami to Palm Beach who were familiar with the mansion.

Among the auction’s decorative arts highlights were a large and heavy pair of 19th century French gilt bronze sconces (above) with finely cast relief Bacchus masks and grape leaf swags which brought $7,260, a pair of 19th century Italian carved painted and gilt wood and tole blackamoor torchieres selling for $7,600, and a large pair of 19th century Italian carved and gilt wood fauteuils at $6,000.

Fine art offerings included these 19th and 20th century paintings: Paul Jean Baptiste Lazerges (French, 1845-1902) Desert Caravan selling for $9,100; a Maurice Louis Tête (French, 1880-1948) Concert bringing $9,100; and a Samuel Barber (American, 1943) Water Lilies selling at $6,000.

Kodner is known for handling fine estate jewelry. The highlights in this category included a GIA certified 2.37-carat emerald-cut diamond engagement ring that sold at $19,500; Ulysse Nardin 18K rose gold limited edition Maxi Skeleton watch at $14,600; and a stunning 17.50-carat diamond and 8.0-carat sapphire bracelet (below) bringing $19,360.
