WINDSOR, Conn. – Nadeau’s Auction Gallery‘s June 10 Spring Outdoor, Mid Century, Art, and Furnishings auction performed notably well. The sale, which featured nearly 650 lots, had a 91% sell through rate, totaled $504,439 and produced solid results in all categories. Absentee and Internet live bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.
Mid-century furniture by American designers Charles and Ray Eames took several of the top lot slots in this signature sale. Among them was a pair of Eames Potato Chip chairs assigned the modest estimate of $800-$1,200 and achieved $7,680. Introduced in 1946, the Potato Chip chair was the couple’s debut mass-produced chair and would go on to become one of the most popular and beloved chair designs of all time.
Also, an Eames 670 lounge chair and rosewood ottoman that was estimated at $2,000-$4,000 traded hands at $5,120. This handsome metal, molded plywood and black leather chair measured 39 by 36 by 32-1/2in. This now-iconic design was introduced in 1956 and was manufactured and sold through Herman Miller.
Important lamps and lighting fixtures were well-represented in this early summer event, led by a Lalique Champs-Elysee chandelier. This chrome and crystal three-tiered fixture featured 18 maple satin leaves and measured around 24-1/2in high with a diameter of roughly 33in. The example in the June 10 sale was estimated at $4,000-$8,000 and made $14,080. Its design was based on a Paris-inspired bowl pattern created by Marc Lalique in 1951.
Lot #345, a Baltic gilt metal cut glass and ruby glass eight-light chandelier, was estimated at $1,500-$2,500 and realized $9,840. Fit for a palatial grand ballroom, this dramatic deep fixture shimmered with golden hardware, an elegant canopy, cascading prisms and chains.
Another lighting standout was a group of four Mid-century table lamps estimated at $200-$450 and sold for $5,760. These included a pair of 34in-tall orange and black fixtures; a signed, 30in-tall Marshall Studios pottery table lamp; and a 38in-tall wood table lamp. Marshall Studios, in business from 1922 through the 1990s, was located in Veedersburg, Indiana and was well known for its early postwar stoneware production.
Fine art was another key category in the auction. Arpana Caur’s (Indian, b. 1954-) End of Night was estimated at $500-$1,000 and delivered $7,680. Caur, a self-taught artist, is known for her images of women and their living conditions in India.
Marcia Myers’ (American, 1949-2008) Scavi CLXX realized $6,400 against an estimate of $3,000-$5,000. This fresco-on-linen triptych color field abstract work was signed “mm 2000” on the verso.
Rounding out the highlights was a pair of crackle glaze tea cups that had an estimate of $200-$400 and traded hands for $5,440. These petite green and white cups came in their original fitted box with their original carved wooden stands. Each cup had a paper tag on its bottom reading Made in China with other Chinese characters.
