DALLAS — Dallas Auction Gallery achieved strong results in Texas and Western art in their September 8 Fine and Decorative Art Auction. The sale featured a large selection of important fine art from Texas estates, including that of a premier Austin homebuilder and art collector, Bill Milburn; Dallas art collectors Sam and Helga Feldman; and the estate of art collector Walter Stein, a cousin of Gertrude Stein.
Leading the sale was a large collection of Texas art, featuring many large bluebonnet paintings by Porfirio Salinas. His signed and dated 1951 work Bluebonnets with Fence and Gate realized $56,250.
The lineup also featured Western paintings and bronzes by G. Harvey. Performing notably was Pinon Smoke Santa Fe, a signed oil on canvas that achieved $75,000.
Other works on offer included five Edouard Cortes Parisian street scenes, including a salon-size painting. A top lot from that group was La Place de la Republique, sous la neige (Republic Place, under the snow), a circa-1905 oil on canvas that sold for $93,750.
A collection of paintings by former NFL star Ernie Barnes set new world records for the artist. Two Shots, a signed acrylic on canvas from 1989, achieved $81,250.
The highlight of the sale was Untitled (White Easter Lillies), a floral still-life by Russian artist Nicolai Fechin. It exceeded its $125,000-200,000 estimate to sell at $281,000.
