FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A cameo glass vase made by Thomas Webb & Sons for its celebrated exhibition stand at the Paris World’s Fair in 1889 sold for $50,000 ($63,000 with buyer’s premium) at Abington Auction Gallery on January 31. It was bought by an online bidder at double its estimate by one of 77 who ‘watched’ the sale via LiveAuctioneers.

The Stourbridge, England firm of Thomas Webb created a spectacular series of cameo glass vases for the Exposition Universelle – the best made by the famed team of George and Thomas Woodall – and given an acid-etched Gem Cameo circular lozenge mark to the base. This particular vase is well-known from the collecting literature and is pictured in both Christopher Woodall Perry’s The Cameo Glass of Thomas and George Woodall (2000) and English Cameo Glass (1988) by the American collector Ray Grover, who owned it for many years.

It is carved to the front with a scene of Cupid blowing a trumpet to the annoyance of Psyche, who covers her ears, while the reverse is decorated with a bouquet of leafy branches. It is signed for George Woodall, who, in anticipation of making a big statement in Paris, had spent many hours studying the antiquities in the collection of the South Kensington Museum.

The top lot in this Fort Lauderdale sale was the large-scale Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847-1928) Orientalist oil Le Bain en Famille, Interieur au Caire (Family Bath, Indoors in Cairo). Signed and dated 1884, this scene of an Egyptian mother bathing her infant son is typical of the oils of so-called ‘exotic’ North African subjects that earned the Alabama artist fame and patronage in the 1870s and 1880s.

One of the earliest members of the Pont-Avon artists’ colony in Brittany, who began a life-long residency in Paris in 1866 on the advice of his teacher Jean-Leon Gerome, he made the first of many trips to Spain and North Africa in 1872. Le Bain en Famille, Interieur au Caire measured a substantial 5ft 3in by 4ft and had some areas of craquelure and patches of overpainting showing under ultraviolet light. Estimated at $20,000-$30,000, it hammered for $65,000 ($81,900 with buyer’s premium).
