MOUNT CRAWFORD, Va. – Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates’ Fine and Decorative Arts Auction April 26 and 27 was a highly successful event and produced robust prices in multiple categories. The two-day format consisted of 1,361 lots of high-quality material and generated record levels of participation for the firm, a solid indication of vigor in this segment of the marketplace. Bidding was intense throughout each day with over 5,000 registered bidders from over 60 countries participating in house and online. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.
Session I on Friday started the weekend off smoothly with most offerings meeting or exceeding expectations. The 439-lot session featured an excellent selection of miniature lighting from the collection of Barbara and Moe Tourison of Concord, Mass.; fine American and European glass from the estate collection of Eugene and Charlene Sussel of Rockville, Md.; and a large assortment of paperweights from private collections. The select grouping offered in the Friday session sparked significant presale interest and produced strong results overall. Top lot of the day was a rare Thomas Webb Chin Lung/Applied Pads art glass vase (above), which garnered $28,080 (all prices include the 17 percent buyer’s premium) from a private collector in Arizona.
Other noteworthy results from the Friday session include an Andrew Jackson/Franklin Pierce White House engraved spoon/celery glass at $7,020 (Lot 275), a Tiffany Favrile paperweight vase at $7,020 (Lot 212), and a threaded opalescent glass miniature lamp at $4,680 (Lot 26).
Session II on Saturday consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of fine and decorative arts and produced strong results and a few surprises with numerous categories demonstrating signs of continued vigor. Saturday’s top lot – and the weekend’s biggest surprise – was a fine antique Caucasian scatter rug at $17,550. Deaccessioned by Mount Vernon, the early weaving remained in excellent condition and went to a New York buyer.
Other noteworthy results from the Saturday session include an impressive eight-piece Kirk sterling tea and coffee service with matching tray at $12,870 (Lot 1710); a rare French Louis XVI Niderviller porcelain annular clock at $12,870 (Lot 1387); and – the most watched lot of the weekend – a fine Stickley Brothers Arts & Crafts Mission Oak china cabinet / closet at $8,775 (Lot 1366) to a California bidder on the phone.
