Tiffany glowed, Pineda sparkled at Moran’s April 6 sale

MONROVIA, Calif. – The results of John Moran‘s April 6 California Living auction prove that buyers are eager to bring the aspirational lifestyle into their homes.

Tiffany lighting from the Alan Schneider Collection led the sale, and several bidders were determined to triumph. A Tiffany Studios three-light Lily table lamp with favrile glass and blossom shades had an estimate of $1,200-$1,800, but sold for $8,750. Also from the Schneider Collection was an acid-etched Galle cameo glass pendant chandelier, frosted from purple to pink. It swept past its $500-$700 estimate to sell for $5,312. A Tiffany Studios Counter-Balance floor lamp stole the show. Estimated at  $4,000-$6,000, it sold for $17,500.

A pair of wrought-iron garden gates became the subject of desire for more than a few collectors. The gates, complete with C-scrolls and bronze floral medallions, sold for $6,250 against an estimate of $500-$700.

California Street, San Francisco by artist Floyd Hildebrand (1896-1984) pictures the same landmark street that was home to the Schneider collection for the past 50 years. The painting sold for $3,750 against an estimate of $1,500-$2,000.

Two snowy scenes by artist Frank J. Gavencky (1888-1966) also performed well. Winter in Chicago, a familiar Midwestern scene of streets and rooftops covered in snow, sold for $17,500 against an estimate of $2,000-$3,000. The second painting, Salt Creek  estimated in the $2,000-$3,000 range, sold for $12,500.

Jewelry lovers pounced on the chance to own pieces by Antonio Pineda. One set of his silver Birdcage jewelry commanded $10,625 against an estimate of $1,000-$1,500. Another popular Pineda creation was a suite of silver and obsidian jewelry with a diamond-shaped collar necklace holding faceted diamond-shaped obsidian. Although its estimate was in the $2,000-$3,000 range, it sold for $13,750.
