CINCINNATI and CHICAGO – Tiffany Studios and Daum glass led Hindman’s biannual May Design auctions, with a number of the top lots coming from the estate of Madelyn Marley of Yakima, Washington. Overall, the Early 20th Century Design auction, held May 23, and the Modern Design auction, which took place May 24, together achieved $1,148,365. Absentee and Internet live bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.

Hindman Director & Senior Specialist, Modern Design Hudson Berry said: “Overall we are very pleased with the results of the spring auctions. From the extraordinary Marley estate glass to the distinct Philip and Kelvin LaVerne furniture and Richard Blow works, it was wonderful to see competitive bidding across so many types of design.”

Hindman Specialist in American Furniture, Folk & Decorative Arts Leah Vogelpohl said: “It was an honor to be able to bring the Marley estate, which featured remarkable, fresh-to-the-market material, to auction. The quality of the collection brought significant attention from design collectors, and the pieces were able to fully shine on auction day.”

Early 20th Century Design | May 23

A Tiffany Studios Cypriote vase from the Marley estate led the Early 20th Century Design auction, soaring past its $15,000-$25,000 estimate to realize $53,550. It was an exceptional example of a Cypriote piece because it not only highlighted the naturalistic-looking results of the technique, it also featured the pulled leaf decoration.

The Marley estate was nearly 100 percent sold. Noteworthy results also included a Daum Bleuets vase, which sold for $31,500, nearly 10 times its estimate.

“The Daum vase is another technical triumph. It incorporates shading, etching, enameling and gilding – all to great effect and remains in excellent condition,” said Vogelpohl.
