Wall Street breakthrough sparks rally at Capo Auction

NEW YORK – The momentous breakthrough on Wall Street last week sparked a buying frenzy on Arturo Di Modica’s bronze sculptures at Capo Auction Fine Art and Antiques. The Italian artist’s Cavallo bronze sold to a prominent horse farm in Wellington, Fla., for $16,800 at Capo Auctons’s sale Jan. 28. Absentee and Internet live bidding was available through LiveAuctioneers.

Di Modica (Italian, b. 1941) created the iconic life-size Charging Bull standing in Bowling Green Park in the Financial District downtown that has become a symbol of Wall Street. His Head of the Charging Bull, 1989, sold for $12,000 at the auction Saturday.

Shortly after the auction ended, Di Modica collectors from the U.K. contacted Capo Auction offering even higher bids, but were too late. They then asked to purchase additional Di Modica pieces the auction house has planned to include in their Feb. 25 auction.

Items in other areas also fared well, with the top fine art seller of the day being a Louis Marcoussis (French, 1883-1941) untitled abstract composition that achieved $33,000.

A stunning Van Cleef & Arpels diamond pin sold for $11,400, while a and a Chopard Imperiale 18K gold watch with a mother of pearl dial climbed to $12,600.

Also featured was a Baccarat crystal chandelier having 18 scrolled arms and accented with prisms and with bead ropes went for $14,400.

Bidding on a pair of A. Walter, Nancy pate de Verre fox bookends jumped to $2,280. A LiveAuctioneers bidder won the set.
